Artist Statement

Leah Watson

My first form of art that I did was dance. I’ve been dancing since I was five or maybe even younger than that. Even though I was forced into it because of my mother’s love for it, I really did enjoy dancing. I don’t dance that much anymore because I just drifted away from it, and then I found photography as a new, interesting form of art. I decided to give photography a try as an elective here at school because I remember my brother doing it when he went here and also I have a friend who is in photo 2 now and said that it was fun and recommended it.

I like to take pictures to capture moments and express myself. It’s also just a great feeling when you take a really good picture. I think what makes my pictures unique or different from others is that I don't plan them out. I’m not really the planning type of artist I really just go with the flow and let the ideas come to me as I go because I feel like things don’t always work out the way you planned them because it’s too forced you should just let it be natural.I like to believe my work ethic is more spontaneous. Another thing that makes my photos unique is that I like the subjects of my photos to be people rather than nature. I prefer people over nature because i think nature photography is kind of played out and people are far more interesting. I also enjoy taking pictures of color rather than black and white, because I think if your photo has color that really pops,it’s going to catch someone’s eye.Which is the reason i chose monochromatic colors for my final theme.

I feel like taking this class has bettered my photography skills already. I can honestly say that  I see someone learning and progressively improving their photography skills when I see my work. I’m also not the only one that thinks so, people have said I have potential and i’m making great progress. My goal in all of this is to just better myself even if I know that I may not be pursuing this in the future, it can't hurt to learn new things or be able to do things like photography. There isn’t a specific artist i get inspiration from, I get a lot of my inspiration from places like Pinterest and unsplash.com.
